A Chinese spacecraft is revealing new capabilities with its “unusual activities” as it recently completed around 270 days in orbit, says President and Managing Director of Leolabs Australia Terry van Haren.
China’s spaceplane conducted proximity and capture maneuvers with subsatellite, data suggests
Leolabs, which provides space situational awareness data through its global network of radars for tracking objects in low Earth orbit, said its analysis found evidence of what appeared to be at least two and possibly three capture/docking operations with a co-orbiting object.
The spacecraft caught and released an unidentified object several times during its flight, performing a series of maneuvers that were captured by orbital radars, according to California-based LeoLabs.
LeoLabs data and analysis is featured in this SpaceNews’ piece on China’s secretive reusable spaceplane landing after 276 days in orbit.
LeoLabs highlights on-orbit maneuvers
A LeoLabs maneuver-detection dashboard displayed at the 38th Space Symposium tracked the location of about 30 Chinese, Iranian and Russian spacecraft in low-Earth orbit.
LeoLabs and ClearSpace have signed an MoU to work together toward a sustainable space ecosystem. LeoLabs offers space traffic management software and operates a ground radar network, and ClearSpace is working on active debris removal technology.
